Minogue up to third on Summit hit list

SB: ISU 10-8, USD 7-2

AMES, Iowa—Sydney Hancock hit a grand slam and Yvon Minogue homered in both games, but it was Iowa State that came away with two wins Tuesday at Cyclone Sports Complex. The Cyclones beat South Dakota 10-7 in game one and 8-2 in the nightcap.

Minogue was 5-for-7 in the twin bill with a double, two homers and three RBIs. She passed DePaul's Karen Stewart and Yvette Heely for third place on the Summit League's all-time hit list with 251. Only North Dakota State's Melissa Chmielewski (258) and Oakland's Ericka Burns (265) have more.

Iowa State (17-24) scored six runs in the fifth inning to erase a 5-2 deficit in game one and led 6-0 after two innings of game two. Second baseman Brittany Gomez was 6-for-9 on the day with a double, two triples and six RBIs. She also scored three times. Sophomore center fielder Kelsey McFarland was 3-for-4 with two home runs and five RBIs in game two. She was 1-for-2 with a walk and an RBI in the opener.

Hancock's grand slam gave the Coyotes (13-29) a 5-2 lead in the fifth inning of game one. It was her seventh home run of the season. Hancock added an RBI single in game two and finished the day 3-for-7.

The Cyclones answered Hancock's slam immediately, scoring six runs on seven hits in chasing Coyote starter Madison Frain. A two-out error extended the rally and led to two unearned runs.

Minogue hit a two-run shot in the top of the sixth to make it 8-7. Gomez laced a two-run triple in the bottom half to push the lead back to three. Iowa State starter Savannah Sanders, who was replaced in the fifth inning, but reentered to start the sixth, worked around a one-out single by Hancock in the seventh to secure the win.

Freshman pitcher Emma Hylen (8-10) pitched a complete game for the Cyclones in game two. She allowed nine hits, struck out four and walked none.

South Dakota returns to Vermillion and will host Creighton in a 1 p.m. doubleheader Wednesday at Nygaard Field.
