Omaha takes first two of three-game set

SB: UNO 9-11, USD 3-4

OMAHA, Neb.—Omaha won a pair of games against South Dakota Saturday at Westside Field at Westbrook. Scores went 9-4 and 11-3 in six innings. The finale of the three-game series is Sunday at 11 a.m.

The Mavericks (27-22, 11-2 Summit) hit four three-run homers during the twin bill and five overall. Each homer came from a different player. Two of the three-run shots came during an 8-run fifth inning in game one that helped Omaha turn a 3-1 deficit into a 9-3 lead. The other three homers came in the night cap.

South Dakota first baseman Yvon Minogue was 5-for-6 on the day with a double to up her season average to .430. She came around to score three times in the opener and has reached base safely in 15 straight.

Minogue stands with 256 career hits including 60 doubles. She's two hits shy of tying Melissa Chmielewski (NDSU) for second place on the Summit League's all-time hit list and two doubles shy of Karen Stewart's (DePaul) all-time mark of 62.

Coyotes Jessica Rogers and Taylor Steinfeldt both homered in the fourth inning of game two to knot the score at 3-3. Omaha responded with three runs in the bottom half of the fourth, got a solo home run from Campbell Ditto in the fifth and then a walk-off shot by Lizzie Noble in the sixth.

South Dakota (13-31, 7-4) out-hit Omaha 15-14, but Coyote pitchers issued 16 free passes – eight in each game. Of the eight runners on base ahead of the Mavericks' four three-run shots, six had been issued a free pass.

Omaha and South Dakota entered play Saturday in second and third place, respectively, in the conference standings. This was the first Summit League series the Coyotes have lost this season.
