Coyotes drop two on Senior Day

SB: NDSU: 3-8, USD 0-2

VERMILLION, S.D.—North Dakota State pitchers Jacquelyn Sertic and Kaitlyn Leddy combined to allow two runs during the Bison's sweep of a doubleheader against South Dakota Friday at Nygaard Field. Scores went 3-0 and 8-2. The third and final game of the series begins at 11 a.m. Saturday.

Both hurlers pitched complete games. Sertic allowed two singles and struck out 13 in the opener. Leddy surrendered two runs on seven hits in game two. She struck out two and walked one.

North Dakota State's top two hitters – right fielder Katie Shoultz and shortstop Logan Moreland – combined to go 8-for-15 with six steals and five runs scored. They accounted for more than half the Bison's hits on the day. Moreland was a triple shy of the cycle in game two. Her two-run homer in the second inning helped North Dakota State to an early 7-1 lead.

It was Senior Day for South Dakota and the Coyotes' three senior batters accounted for five of the team's nine hits. Yvon Minogue and Katie Cochran both singled in game one. Cochran was 2-for-4 with an RBI double in game two. Senior Sydney Hancock was 1-for-3. Kayla Fields, a junior, was 2-for-3 including an RBI double.

South Dakota senior pitcher Madison Frain got the start in game one. She allowed two runs on five hits in the opening inning and got a strike out to end the inning with the bases loaded. Frain allowed just two hits the rest of the way and finished with three strikeouts.

Megan Green entered in relief for the Coyotes in game two down 3-0 with the bases loaded and no outs in the first inning. She got a ground ball double play and a line out to end the first, gave up four runs in the second, then retired 15 of the final 18 batters she faced to record all 21 outs.

North Dakota State (32-13, 14-0 Summit) has won 24 consecutive Summit League games dating back to a home loss to South Dakota last season. The Coyotes (13-34, 7-7) have lost seven in a row, but can secure their fourth consecutive Summit League Tournament bid with a win tomorrow or a Fort Wayne loss against South Dakota State.
