BROOKINGS, S.D.—South Dakota senior first baseman Yvon Minogue tied the Summit League's career doubles record in a doubleheader split with South Dakota State Friday at Jackrabbit Softball Stadium. South Dakota won game one 5-4 and dropped game two 12-11. The rubber match starts at 11 a.m. Saturday.
Minogue was 4-for-9 in the twin bill with two doubles, two RBIs and three runs scored. She tied DePaul's Karen Stewart atop the Summit's doubles list with 62 and, with 263 hits, is two away from Ericka Burns of Oakland for the most hits in Summit League history.
The Coyotes won game one behind a three-run homer from Shelby Keil and a complete-game performance in the circle from Madison Frain (11-14). Keil's sixth homer of the season put USD ahead 4-1 in the top of the third. An insurance run provided by a pinch-hit sacrifice fly by Kayla Fields in the top of the sixth proved crucial as the Jacks got a two-run homer from Ali Herdliska in the bottom of the inning to climb within one. Frain struck out Devan Larsen with two on in the seventh to close out the win.
Frain allowed eight hits and struck out six to help the Coyotes stop a seven-game slide. One of the four runs she surrendered was unearned.
It was an unearned run in the bottom of the seventh that allowed SDSU to walk-off with game two. A base hit through the left side by Lauren Chirnside scored Lyndsey Crist with the winning run. Crist reached on an error earlier in the inning.
South Dakota led 5-1 after 4 ½ innings, State scored 10 runs in the bottom of fifth, and the Coyotes tied it with three runs in both the sixth and seventh innings. Coyote left fielder Katie Cochran's two-out, two-run double tied the game at 11-11 in the final inning. It was one of 16 hits by USD in game two. SDSU had 14 hits, 11 of which came in the fifth inning.
Both teams hit three home runs in game two. Coyote catcher Jessica Rogers was 3-for-4 with a double, a homer and four RBIs in the nightcap. Cochran hit a solo shot for three RBIs in game two. Jamie Holscher also went yard for the Coyotes.
South Dakota can secure the No. 3 seed in the Summit League Tournament with a win against South Dakota State or with a Fort Wayne win against Western Illinois. The Tournament will be played May 11-14 in Fargo, N.D.
