VERMILLION, S.D.—South Dakota took the first two games of a three-game series against IUPUI Saturday at Nygaard Field, sweeping a doubleheader 4-1 and 10-9. The Coyotes (11-26, 6-2 Summit) won their third consecutive series to start Summit League play while sending IUPUI (10-24, 0-7) to its seventh straight loss. Game three is Sunday at 11 a.m.
South Dakota pitcher
Madison Frain (8-9) allowed three hits in her complete-game effort in game one and got the final four outs to save game two. Leading by a run in the sixth inning of the nightcap, Frain induced a ground ball to second with runners on second and third to preserve the lead. She caught Kaitlynn Moody looking with two on for the final out of the seventh.
The Coyotes' first two hitters – first baseman
Yvon Minogue and second baseman
Jamie Holscher – each scored twice in the opener. They both scored on a double by
Jessica Rogers in the bottom of the third for the first runs of the game.
Katie Cochran made it 3-0 with an RBI single in the fifth and
Shelby Keil drew a bases loaded walk to make it 4-0. Rogers was 2-for-2 and Minogue 2-for-4 in game one.
South Dakota scored three runs in the second inning of game two to erase a 2-0 deficit and posted five runs in the third to lead 8-3. IUPUI got back-to-back home runs from Sarah Lawrence and Maggie Good in the fourth to make it 8-5. The Jaguars scored an unearned run in the fifth that made it 9-6. Moody hit a solo shot as part of a three-run sixth that closed the gap to 10-9. The Jaguars hit four home runs in the nightcap.
Keil, Cochran and Holscher each drove in two runs in game two. Keil was 3-for-4 with two doubles. Cochran has a two-run single in the third as part of a 2-for-4 effort. Holscher had RBI singles in each of her first two at bats.
Coyote third baseman
Sydney Hancock was 2-for-4 and scored twice in two. Her RBI single in the fifth extended USD's lead to 10-6.
South Dakota pounded out 19 hits to 14 for IUPUI on the day. Holscher was 3-for-6 in the twin bill with four runs scored. Frain allowed one run on four hits and struck out five in 8 1/3 innings of work.
