VERMILLION, S.D.—North Dakota freshman Karleen Yapello volleyed the golden goal into the net in a double-overtime 1-0 victory against South Dakota in front of 442 fans at First Bank & Trust Soccer Complex on Sunday.
Yapello subbed into the match for the Fighting Hawks in the 105th minute. After the Coyotes failed to clear a corner kick by North Dakota's Kennedy Kidd, Yapello found the ball bouncing towards her. She swung a volley from the top of the 18 and the ball fell just under the crossbar, out of reach of South Dakota goalkeeper
Sydney Hardin. The golden goal came in the 109th minute after a scoreless regulation.
South Dakota falls to 1-1-0 on the season, while North Dakota (1-0-1) earns its first win following a scoreless draw with Northern Iowa in its season opener.
The Coyotes and the Fighting Hawks each recorded 14 shots, but South Dakota held a 9-7 edge in shots on goal. North Dakota's reserve goalkeeper, Catherine Klein tallied nine saves and her second shutout in as many contests. Hardin and sophomore goalkeeper
Parker Rytz tallied three saves apiece for the Coyotes.
Senior striker
Corey Strang led all players with six shots in the match, putting three on-goal. Strang's closest attempt nicked the cross bar in the 20th minute, bouncing up and over the frame. Klein also had a diving save off a shot to the far post by sophomore midfielder
Cooper Thau in the 55th minute. Freshman striker
Amanda Carpio was the second Coyote with more than one shot-on-goal, tallying two.
South Dakota also edged North Dakota in corner kicks 10-3.
North Dakota sophomore Katie Moller led the Fighting Hawks with four shots during regulation, with one saved by Hardin, two hitting the crossbar and one flying right of the post.
The Coyotes travel to California next weekend for a pair of matches against UC Riverside and CSUN.
