INDIANAPOLIS—Jaguar defender Braegan Lyon headed the ball into the back of the net for her first goal of the season as IUPUI defeated South Dakota 2-0 at Carroll Stadium on Friday evening.
The start time of the Summit League opener was delayed due to lightning in the area. The programs faced similar weather conditions to their meeting a year ago, when South Dakota (1-10-1, 0-1 Summit) came out victorious, 2-1, in the downpour.
IUPUI (7-4-1, 1-0 Summit) remains undefeated on their home field this season with a 5-0 record.
Lyon put the Jaguars on the board in the 22nd minute with her header inside the box. Striker Krissy Kirkoff scored off a penalty kick in the 49th minute to put IUPUI up 2-nil.
South Dakota outshot IUPUI 12-9, but placed only four on target. Freshman striker
Taryn LaBree placed two of her three shots on-frame. IUPUI goalkeeper Catherine Schmidt pulled in three saves. USD sophomore goalkeeper
Parker Rytz played the full 90 minutes between the posts and grabbed four saves.
South Dakota travels to Western Illinois for kickoff at 12 p.m. Sunday in Macomb, Ill.
