Mooney's big second half carries Coyotes to victory

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio. — A second-half surge rallied the South Dakota men's basketball team to an 88-79 victory Monday night over Bowling Green in Bowling Green, Ohio.
 
Junior Matt Mooney, who made just four of his first 16 shots, went 7-of-9 from the field in the second half and totaled 26 points to carry the Coyotes to victory. Tyler Hagedorn tallied 15 points, with 11 in the second half, and Carlton Hurst added 14 points and nine rebounds.
 
Trailing 53-48 with 10:25 remaining in the game, Mooney hit a 3-point basket followed by an old-fashioned 3-point play by Hagedorn to give South Dakota (2-0) a one-point lead with 9:12 remaining.
 
The two squads then traded the lead on the next four possessions until Nick Fuller found Hagedorn open for a 3-point basket and a 59-57 lead. The lead continued to grow thanks to a 3-point play from Fuller. The senior received a pass from Triston Simpson and went up strong, making contact and the basket.
 
After Daeqwon Plowden scored a layup for Bowling Green (1-1), Hagedorn hit yet another 3-point basket to give USD a 65-59 lead.
 
Bowling Green cut the deficit back to six points after a pair of free throws but Mooney took over, scoring the next seven points to give South Dakota an 11-point lead with 5:13 remaining. Mooney utilized a 3-point basket, a jumper and a fast-break layup for the seven-consecutive points.
 
The Falcons twice cut the lead to just four points in the closing minutes but the Coyotes had the response each time, settling on the nine-point victory.
 
South Dakota shot 57.6 percent from the field (19-33) in the second half, including 57.1 percent of its 3-point attempts to aid in the victory. For the game, the Coyotes shot 29-of-61 for 47.5 percent while holding the home team to 34.2 percent (25-of-73) shooting.
 

Playing their first road game of the season, it took the Coyotes a few minutes to settle in as BGSU built a seven-point lead just two minutes into the contest. Trailing by six points with 9:55 remaining in the first half, USD made a 6-0 run to knot the game at 24-24. The run included a layup from Fuller and a pair of free throws from Simpson and Hurst.
 
The Coyotes did not hold a lead in the first half of the contest, instead capturing their first lead on the first basket of the second half. Trey Burch-Manning got into the paint for the layup and a 35-34 lead.
 
South Dakota tallied 21 assists on the evening led by a career-best seven from Mooney. Simpson matched a career-best, also seven assists. Hurst led the team with nine rebounds, including four on the offensive end, while Trey Burch Manning had seven points and six rebounds. Fuller added eight points and five rebounds off the bench.
 
Dylan Frye led Bowling Green with 23 points while Derek Koch added 15 points and Rodrick Caldwell totaled 10 points.
 
South Dakota stays on the road for a Wednesday night contest at TCU. Tip-off from Fort Worth, Texas, is slated for 8 p.m.
