Coyotes beat Leathernecks behind Dickerson's 21

MBB: USD 92, WIU 81

MACOMB, Ill.—Trey Dickerson scored a season-high 21 points while Matt Mooney and Tyler Flack added 16 apiece as South Dakota topped Western Illinois 92-81 Thursday inside Western Hall.

The Coyotes (20-10, 11-4 Summit), winners of five in a row, reached 20 wins for the first time since the 2009-10 campaign. They also tied North Dakota State for first place in the Summit League standings with one game to go. South Dakota takes on IUPUI Saturday in Indianapolis while the Bison travel to Omaha to face the Mavericks.

South Dakota swept the season series with Western Illinois (8-18, 5-10) for the second time in three seasons and has won six of the last seven meetings in the series.

The Leathernecks got 24 points and 13 rebounds from Mike Miklusak and 21 points and seven assists from Garret Covington, but lost for the ninth time in their last 11 games. Western Illinois will be the No. 8 seed at the Summit League Tournament and will face either South Dakota or North Dakota State in the first round at 6 p.m. on March 4 in Sioux Falls.

South Dakota shot 49 percent from the field, outrebounded WIU by nine, and outscored the Leathernecks from the free-throw line 26-14. In addition to Dickerson, Flack and Mooney, South Dakota got 10 points and a season-high 14 rebounds from Trey Burch-Manning. It was his third double-double of the season. Tyler Peterson added eight points, all coming in the first half, off the Coyote bench.

Dickerson scored 10 of South Dakota's first 14 points in the first half and also had the team's first four points out of the break. He finished 5 of 10 from the field, including 2 of 3 from beyond the arc, and made 9 of 12 free throws.

South Dakota led 44-41 at halftime behind Dickerson, Peterson and Burch-Manning, who had eight points and nine boards in the opening stanza. Miklusak had 14 points for Western Illinois in the first 20 minutes. It was certainly a different half than the first one played back in Vermillion back in January when the Leathernecks led 25-22 at the break.

It was 54-50 South Dakota when the Coyotes took control of the game with a 14-2 run that gave them their largest lead with less than 10 minutes to go. Mooney hit both of his 3-pointers during the rally while the defense held the Leathernecks without a field goal. The Coyotes led by at least nine points the rest of the way.

Flack scored half of his 16 points in the final 10 minutes. He was 5 of 12 from the field and 6 of 6 from the line. Flack, South Dakota's lone senior, stands with 897 career points and 498 career rebounds. His two blocks give him 141, fourth-most in program history and two behind Steve Anderson for third place on the list.

South Dakota closes the regular season against IUPUI at 6 p.m. Saturday. A win would give the Coyotes at least a share of their first Summit League Championship. They would also clinch at least a share of the title and would be the No. 1 seed at the Summit League Tournament should Omaha beat North Dakota State, which tips off at 7 p.m. Saturday. Should both South Dakota and North Dakota State win Saturday, the Bison would be the top seed only if South Dakota State beats Denver at home Saturday AND if Western Illinois beats Fort Wayne in Macomb. If either Denver OR Fort Wayne wins their respective game, South Dakota would be the No. 1 seed.
