SANTA CLARA, Calif.—South Dakota softball split a pair of games Saturday that ended with identical scores. Weber State beat the Coyotes 6-4 in game one and South Dakota beat Santa Clara by the same score in game two on the second day of a tournament hosted by Santa Clara. The Coyotes are 3-1 at the tournament and improved to 5-6 on the season.
Weber State (4-7-1) scored four runs in the fifth inning to turn a 3-2 deficit into a 6-3 lead. Molly Horne had a two-run double in the inning that put the Wildcats ahead. Mackenzi Corta added an RBI single as part of a 2-for-3, two-RBI performance. Kirtlyn Bohling (2-6) went the distance in the circle for Weber State, allowing 11 hits and striking out three.
South Dakota scored three runs in the second inning on a bases-loaded walk by
Christy Warnock, an RBI single by
Camille Fowler and an RBI groundout by
Morgan Vasa. The Coyotes loaded the bases in the third inning, but Bohling induced a line-drive double play to end the threat. South Dakota brought the tying run to the plate in the seventh inning, but Bohling got a ground ball to second and a fly ball to center to close the game.
Another three-run inning, this time in the top of the first, gave the Coyotes an early lead against Santa Clara (2-7). Fowler and Vasa started the game with back-to-back singles and
Shelby Keil and
Taylor Steinfeldt drove in a run each during the frame.
The Broncos answered with a run in the second and two more in the third to tie the game at 3-3. It stayed that way until Warnock doubled and came around to score the go-ahead run in the sixth. Keil added a sacrifice fly later in the inning and USD took a 6-3 lead.
Megan Green (1-1) got the win for South Dakota after pitching 2 2/3 innings of relief, but handed the ball to teammate
Rachel Cue for the final out. Cue, who started the game and pitched the first four innings, entered with a run already in and the tying run on first base, but struck out designated player Morgan Modesto swinging to earn the save. Cue allowed three runs on three hits and struck out three during the game.
All nine Coyotes in head coach
Robert Wagner's batting order scored at least one run during play Saturday. Vasa scored twice.
Jessica Rogers was 4-for-7 on the day to lead the team in hits. Steinfeldt, Fowler, Vasa,
Jamie Holscher and
Emily Winckler each had three hits. Keil had two RBIs.
South Dakota wraps up the tournament with an 11 a.m. (CT) game against Illinois-Chicago Sunday. The Coyotes beat the Flames 1-0 on Friday.
