SEATTLE—South Dakota scored two runs in its final inning against Penn State Friday, but it accounted for the team's only runs in two games at the Husky Classic hosted by Washington University. The Coyotes lost to Seattle 8-0 in their opening game and dropped a 6-2 decision to Penn State.
South Dakota (7-12) mustered just six hits on the day and didn't get any against Seattle pitcher Alyssa Reuble in game one. Reuble (3-5) retired all 15 batters she faced to record a five-inning perfect game. The Redhawks' six-run third inning featured a three-run double by Maddy Kristjanson and a two-run double by Cherise Silvan, which proved more than enough for Reuble.
A two-out error by South Dakota led to four unearned runs for Penn State in the bottom of the sixth inning and proved to be the difference in game two. The Nittany Lions (9-12) got a complete-game performance from pitcher Marlaina Laubach, who struck out eight and walked one. Center fielder Rebecca Ziegler was 2-for-4 with three RBIs to lead Penn State.
South Dakota got a solo home run from Emily Winckler in the top of the seventh to make it 6-1. It was her third home run of the season. Jamie Holscher doubled and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Christy Warnock to make it 6-2. Shortstop Shelby Keil was 2-for-3 during the game.
The Coyotes return to the field Saturday for a rematch with Seattle (6-14) at noon (CT). USD will take on eighth-ranked Washington at 4:45 p.m. (CT).
