IOWA CITY, Iowa—South Dakota freshman Erica Limon belted a three-run home run in the top of the eighth inning to lead the Coyotes to a 5-3 win against Creighton Sunday at a tournament hosted by University of Iowa.
It was the first collegiate homer for Limon and it came in her 13th collegiate at bat. Limon entered as a pinch hitter in the fourth inning and stayed in the game at second base. Her blast to right came with one out and broke a 2-2 tie. It helped give USD (9-16) its second win over Creighton (9-15) in as many days and its third victory over the Bluejays this season.
Ally Wiegand, who threw a three-hit shutout against Creighton Saturday, entered in relief to start the bottom of the seventh inning and picked up the win. She allowed a pair of two-out singles in the eighth inning before striking out Mikaela Pechar with runners on first and second to end the game. Wiegand (5-4) struck out the side in the eighth.
Rachel Cue pitched the first three innings for South Dakota and Megan Green pitched three scoreless innings of relief before handing to Wiegand. Cue allowed a lead off home run to Ashley Cantu in the first, but struck out four Sunday. Cantu singled and scored Creighton's second run in the third.
South Dakota tied it with an unearned run in the fourth inning and an RBI single by Shelby Keil in the fifth. Keil is 6-for-14 in four games in Iowa City and remains the Summit's top hitter with a .382 average.
The Coyotes take on Iowa at 3 p.m. Monday before returning to campus.
