Yotes score 27 runs on day two

Hatter Classic

DELAND, Fla.—South Dakota softball rebounded from a 15-7 loss to LIU Brooklyn to beat Bethune-Cookman 20-12 Saturday on the second day of the Hatter Classic hosted by Stetson University. The Coyotes (7-9) have a rematch with LIU Brooklyn at 11:15 a.m. CT Sunday before returning to campus.

All nine South Dakota starters had a hit and scored a run, and all but one recorded an RBI. Taylor Steinfeldt and Christy Warnock were on base all day. Both were 5-for-6 at the dish and combined to draw three walks. Steinfeldt had three of USD's six doubles and scored five runs.

LIU Brooklyn (8-8), an NCAA Tournament team a season ago, batted around in each of its first two innings against South Dakota. The Blackbirds scored 11 runs and had 14 hits in those two frames. Catcher Samantha Offenback had two-run homers in both innings. Designated player Shelley Procter was 4-for-4 with four RBIs.

Steinfeldt and Warnock combined to go 4-for-4 against the Blackbirds. South Dakota scored in four of its five innings, but couldn't overcome LIU Brooklyn's fast start.

Hard to believe that South Dakota trailed 4-0 thru three innings against Bethune-Cookman. The Coyotes pounded out 16 hits over their final four at bats, including 10 consecutive hits to start a 10-run seventh inning. Camille Fowler, who led off the inning with an infield single, also had a two-run triple before the first out was recorded. The Coyotes had three extra-base hits during the inning.

Catcher Jessica Rogers was 4-for-5 with four RBIs against the Wildcats. Warnock and Steinfeldt were both 3-for-4. Third baseman Jamie Holscher was 2-for-5 with four RBIs. Shelby Keil was 2-for-6 with two doubles, two RBIs and two runs scored.

USD has averaged 11 runs with a batting average of .409 in its four games in Florida. Warnock, Steinfeldt and Fowler each have seven hits on the trip. Warnock has been on base 11 times in 14 plate appearances (.786).
