DELAND, Fla.—LIU Brooklyn rallied from an early 4-0 deficit to beat South Dakota 12-5 on the final day of the Hatter Classic hosted by Stetson University at Patricia Wilson Field.
South Dakota (7-10) lost to the Blackbirds (9-9) for the second time in as many days and finished 2-3 at the three-day tournament. LIU Brooklyn, an NCAA Tournament team from a year ago, finished 4-1.
The Coyotes built their early lead on a grand slam by Emily Winckler in the top of the second. It was the second home run of the season for Winckler, who finished 1-for-2 with a walk.
Gina Bond fired back with a solo shot to lead off the bottom half of the second, and the Blackbirds made it 4-2 later in the inning on a base hit to center by Victoria Zamora.
USD third baseman Jamie Holscher singled in the fourth inning and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Camille Fowler to put the Coyotes ahead 5-2. Fowler was 1-for-3.
South Dakota combined for four errors in the infield during the fourth and fifth innings and the Blackbirds pounced. They scored three times in the fourth to tie the game at 5-5, and tacked on five in the fifth to take their first lead. Seven of the eight runs scored in those innings were unearned. Kylie Mulholland added a two-run homer in the sixth to cap the scoring.
Tallie Woodson (4-4) entered in relief for LIU Brooklyn in the fourth inning and allowed two hits the rest of the way to earn the win. Rachel Cue (2-4) pitched her second complete game of the season for South Dakota.
The Coyotes head to Seattle next weekend for five games in three days starting Friday at the Husky Classic hosted by the University of Washington. USD is scheduled to face Seattle twice and Penn State, Washington and Penn State once each.
