VERMILLION, S.D. — It took 92 minutes of action Thursday afternoon but it was worth it for the South Dakota soccer team in a 1-0 victory over Creighton. Sophomore
Taryn LaBree scored the game-winning goal just 1:25 into the first overtime period to give the Coyotes their first victory of the season.
Â
"I received a great pass from
Kellee Willer, a pass that we always practice to get the through-ball in," LaBree said. "I cut in, and finally went low-far post, like Coach Mandy has been telling me all season and finally got the goal."
Â
The goal gives South Dakota its first-ever program victory over Creighton and also gives the Coyotes their first victory of the season.
Â
"They (the team) have been working so hard to get to this point," head coach
Mandy Green said. "I love that today we were able to put a ball into the back of the net and reward ourselves for all the work that has been put in.
Â
"Low-far post is the toughest spot for a goalkeeper to save when she (Taryn) is coming from that angle. Taryn's runs are dangerous and she is so fast. Our midfielders have been doing a great job of finding her. She stepped up big."
Â
LaBree nearly had a first half goal when she broke free of the of the Creighton (0-4-0) defense off a pass from
Taylor Kelly but missed wide left. Another opportunity presented itself in the 74
th minute when Madison Sullivan sent a pass through the defense setting up a one-on-one situation for
Dani Brown and the Creighton goalkeeper. Brown made a move but McKenzie Meola made a great diving stop for the Bluejays.
Â
Creighton landed five shots on goal with junior goalkeeper
Coral Suarez stopping all five shots to earn her first-career shutout. Hannah Miller led the Bluejays with three shots, all landing on goal.
Â
South Dakota tallied 12 total shots led by LaBree's three. Sullivan added two shots with seven others attempting one.
Â
The Coyotes look to carry the momentum to North Dakota with a noon kickoff in Grand Forks on Sunday.
Â
"I told them to enjoy this win tonight and tomorrow we've got to get back after it," Green added.
