FARGO, N.D. — The South Dakota soccer team fell 2-0 Thursday night to North Dakota State in the Summit League opener for both teams. The Coyotes outshot the Bison 18-12 but were unable to find the back of the net at Dacotah Field in Fargo.

North Dakota State (3-8-0, 1-0-0 Summit) controlled the early portion of the match and notched a goal in the sixth minute. Danielle Algera sent a long pass to Malley O'Brien who was able to send a shot into the left side of the net for the early lead.

The Coyotes had an excellent opportunity to tie the game when Sammie Villwock beat a defender to the left side of the box and fired a shot to the near post but was stopped by the Bison goalkeeper, pushing it out-of-bounds in the 13th minute.

After falling behind 2-0 in the 28th minute, South Dakota (2-8-0, 0-1-0 Summit) created more opportunities on the offensive end including a line drive from Kellee Willer from 30 yards out. The sophomore took her attempt that brought Monica Polgar, the NDSU goalkeeper, out 10 yards and made her leave both feet to make the stop.

Coming out of the intermission, South Dakota continued its barrage of shot attempts, including three in a span of 60 seconds. Taryn LaBree fired a shot from the right side of the field towards the upper-left corner of the goal but was swatted away by Polgar to the feet of Willer. She then attempted a shot but was cleared by the NDSU defense. After a very quick reset, LaBree sent a through-ball to Willer who attempted a shot from 10 yards out but bounced off the cross bar.

In all, South Dakota attempted 12 shots in the second half, placing five on frame. Polgar stopped all eight shots she faced in the game. Coral Suarez received the start in goal for USD, making three saves. Sydney Hardin, making her 2017 debut, took over in the second half and made two saves for the Coyotes.

Willer tallied a game-high seven shots while Alexis Mitchell attempted three with Dani Brown and LaBree making two attempts. Four other Coyotes registered a shot attempt in the contest.

South Dakota returns to First Bank & Trust Soccer Complex on Friday, Oct. 6 to host league-favorite Denver at 4 p.m.
