VERMILLION, S.D. — Six broken records highlight the South Dakota senior day victory over Western Illinois Saturday in the DakotaDome. The men outscored the Leathernecks 191-92 as the women won 177-103.
Isaac Morris not only broke his own school records in the one-meter and the three-meter but broke the pool records as well. His three-meter dive performance earned him a score of 357.68, which broke the pool record of 337.15 and his previous school record of 347.33. On the one-meter dive, he received a 317.25 score, which broke the pool record of 310.57 and his previously set school record of 308.00.
In addition to Morris,
Elbert Chuang and
Nick Gehling broke the short course pool records. Chuang broke the 200-meter breaststroke record (2 minutes, 23.90 seconds) with a finishing time of 2:21.85. Gehling surpassed the 200-meter backstroke record (2:08.90) with a time of 2:08.30.
The Coyote men captured both relay events against the Leathernecks. The 200-meter medley relay consisting of
Eric Erlenmeyer,
Steve Wascom,
Kyle Weis and
Gray Determan finished with a time of 1:47.31. The 200-meter freestyle relay consisting of Erlenmeyer,
Jared Thorson,
Elbert Chuang and Weis finished at 1:37.47.
South Dakota came in one after the other in a number of events.
Seth Jones and
Jack Lawrence captured first and second in the 800-meter freestyle. Jones finished with a time of 8:49.72 and Lawrence with a time of 8:56.76.
In the men's 200-meter freestyle, the Coyotes took the first three spots. Chuang finished first at 1:57.13,
Josh Sorbe in second at 1:58.86 and
Nathan Spencer in third at 1:59.52.
Christian Fossum and Gehling finish in the top-two of the 200-meter butterfly. Fossum came in at 2:14.36 and Gehling at 2:17.82.
Hunter Padgett and Chuang went 1, 2 in the 100-meter freestyle with Padgett capturing first with a time of 52.92 and Chuang in second with a finish of 54.87.
Padgett also won the 50-meter freestyle with a time of 24.03 as Thorson finished right behind him with a time of 24.34.
Other notable finishes for the men include Erlenmeyer winning the 100-meter backstroke with a time of 1:00.22, Wascom capturing the 100-meter breaststroke with a finish of 1:05.77 and Thorson taking the 200-meter individual medley with a finishing time of 2:16.44.
The South Dakota women also had a number of back-to-back finishes.
Quinn Fawcett and
Taylor Kidd took the top-two spots in the 800-meter freestyle. Fawcett came in at 9:33.69 and Kidd at 9:41.14.
The Coyotes finished in the top-three spots in the 100-meter backstroke.
Kathleen Juffer finished first with a time of 1:06.03, Godlewski came in at second with a time of 1:06.88 and Gupton right behind at 1:09.76.
In the 100-meter freestyle, the Coyotes once again took the top-three spots. Fawcett finished first with a time of 1:02.08,
Hannah Tietjen in second with a time of 1:02.12 and
Katie Coleman in third with a time of 1:02.14.
On the diving board, in the one-meter and the three-meter dives,
Sarah Schank and
Haley Pederson finished top-two. Schank scored a 266.55 on the one-meter and a 296.85 on the three-meter. Pederson finished with a score of 250.35 on the one-meter and 268.20 on the three-meter.
For the relays, the 200-meter freestyle relay team consisting of
Cora Ruzicka,
Theresa Godlewski,
Hannah Gupton and
Kellee Lekavy finished first with a time of 1:51.98.
Individually,
Sabrina Sabadeanu claimed victories in two events. She won the 50-meter freestyle with a time of 27.91 and the 200-meter individual medley with a time of 2:25.81.
Fawcett claimed her third event title after she won the 400-meter freestyle with a finishing time of 4:40.22.
Other top finishes for the Coyotes include
Kaitlyn Housenga's victory in the 200-meter butterfly (2:33.95), Godlewski's win in the 200-meter backstroke (2:24.85),
Kassidie Cornell's title in the 200-meter breaststroke (2:44.35) and Gupton's victory the in 100-meter butterfly (1:07.33).
South Dakota heads back to the Midco
® Aquatic Center in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, to host the Coyote Invitational Friday and Saturday. The first event starts Friday at 6 p.m.
