Members of the 1978 football team are back on campus this weekend, celebrating 40 years since a magical run that culminated in an outright NCC title. The team started 1-3, but used a 17-14 win against a nationally-ranked North Dakota State team to turn the tide and rattle off six consecutive victories. The 1978 squad was also the last to play at Inman Stadium. The final game there was a 24-7 victory against North Dakota on Oct. 28, 1978.
 
What follows is a brief synopsis of the 1978 season from the keyboard of USD Hall of Famer Mike Mahon, who served as sports information director for the Coyotes from 1977-88. Mahon went on to work at Drake University from 1988 until he retired in 2010. He continues to follow the Yotes from his home in Des Moines, Iowa, where he continues as a sports consultant.
