Burch-Manning propels Coyotes to victory over UMBC

MBB: USD 58, UMBC 52

BIMINI, Bahamas – The South Dakota men's basketball team overcame a slow start to top UMBC 58-52 in the final game of the inaugural Bimini Jam Monday night at Gateway Christian Academy.

Trey Burch-Manning tallied a game-high 20 points on 8-of-10 field goal attempts to help push the Coyotes to victory. South Dakota improves to 3-2 on the season while UMBC falls to 4-2.

After the Retrievers opened the game with nine-straight points, Burch-Manning hit the first of his four 3-point baskets to get the Coyotes on the scoreboard and spark a 10-2 Coyote run.

South Dakota grabbed its first lead of the game on a pair of Tyler Peterson free throws with 6:44 on the clock at 19-18 and entered intermission leading 35-31.

It looked as if the Coyotes may start the second half as the first after UMBC scored five-straight points to open the half. However, Brandon Armstrong hit back-to-back 3-point baskets and the Coyotes went on an 8-1 run to regain the lead at 45-37.

The Coyote lead would hold steady throughout the second half, getting as high as nine points at 52-43 with 4:02 on the clock.

Armstrong, playing point guard due to the absence of Cody Kelley who was out with an injury, was sent to the free throw line on back-to-back possessions and calmly sank four-straight attempts to seal the victory at 58-52.

South Dakota shot 40 percent (18-of-45) from the field while holding UMBC to 32.7 percent (17-of-52).

Armstrong joined Burch-Manning in double digits with 12 points. Peterson grabbed a game-high nine rebounds while Burch-Manning and Triston Simpson each had five.

Arkel Lamar led the Retrievers with 13 points as Ricky Council II added 10 points.

The game capped an outstanding tournament for Burch-Manning, a senior, as he averaged 20.7 points on 24-of-35 shooting (68.6 percent) and went 9-of-12 from 3-point land. He also grabbed five rebounds per game over the three-game Bimini Jam.

The Coyotes return to action on Tuesday, Nov. 27, for a 7 p.m. contest at Baylor.
