Softball drops two in Tempe

SB in Tempe

TEMPE, Ariz.—Emily Winckler hit a two-run home run against Notre Dame and Taylor Steinfeldt laced a two-run triple against Purdue to highlight South Dakota softball at the Kajikawa Classic Saturday. The Coyotes dropped a 9-6 decision to Notre Dame earlier in the day and lost 11-2 in five innings to Purdue in the nightcap.

Steinfeldt was 3-for-7 with two runs scored on the day. She has two triples this season and four for her career. Winckler was 2-for-5 including her eighth collegiate home run and second this season. She also walked twice.

A brief summary of both games follows:

Notre Dame 9, South Dakota 6
Katie Marino and Sara White both homered and combined for five RBIs in leading Notre Dame to the win. Cait Brooks added two hits and three RBIs for the Fighting Irish (3-0). UND scored four runs in the third to erase an early 2-1 deficit and tacked on two more runs in both the fifth and sixth innings.

Steinfeldt singled and scored in each of her first two at bats. Winckler's two-home bomb to right centerfield cut Notre Dame's lead to 7-6 in the fifth. Katie Beriont, Notre Dame's third pitcher of the game, got the final six outs to earn the win. She allowed two hits and struck out three.

Purdue 11, South Dakota 2
The Boilermakers belted four home runs and took advantage of seven South Dakota errors to earn the five-inning win. Purdue (1-3) had just eight hits, but six walks, the seven miscues and four long balls provided plenty of offense.

Kaitlynn Moody pitched all five innings for Purdue. She worked around four hits and five walks and was one out from a shutout until giving up the triple to Steinfeldt in the fifth.

South Dakota (0-5) concludes play in Tempe at 10 a.m. (CT) Sunday against Northwestern.
