TEMPE, Ariz.—Northwestern displayed plenty of speed in racking up 13 runs on 13 hits in a 13-5 win against South Dakota Sunday on the final day of Arizona State's Kajikawa Classic. The Wildcats improved to 4-1 while the Coyotes fell to 0-6.
Northwestern leadoff hitter Sabrina Rabin had half of the Wildcats' six infield singles and stole two of Northwestern's five bases. Rabin, an all-Big Ten honoree, was 3-for-4 with three runs scored.
South Dakota led 1-0 following a solo home run by
Emily Winckler in the top of the first. It was her third home run and sixth RBI of the weekend. Winckler was 1-for-2 with a walk and two runs scored.
Coyote second baseman
Alyssa Fernandez capped an impressive debut by belting her fourth home run, a two-run shot in the third that cut Northwestern's lead to 8-3. Fernandez, who grew up in nearby Mesa, was 6-for-16 in six games with four homers, eight RBIs and eight runs scored. She also drew six walks for an on-base percentage of .545.
USD freshman
Lauren Eamiguel recorded the Coyotes' first three-hit game of 2018. Included in her 3-for-3 performance were two doubles, the second of which drove in two runs later in the third that cut the lead to 8-5. Eamiguel was 6-for-16 with three doubles on the trip.
South Dakota, which has two more weekend trips to Arizona on its schedule, travels to Las Vegas next week for UNLV's Marucci Desert Classic. The Coyotes will play five games there from Friday thru Sunday. First up is a rematch with San Jose State at 1:15 p.m. (CT) Friday followed by a night game with CSUN.
