LAS VEGAS—South Dakota fought back from a three-run deficit only to see San Jose State score three in the sixth en route to a 6-5 win Friday on day one of UNLV's Marucci Desert Classic. The Coyotes (0-7) return to the field at 6 p.m. (PST) to face CSUN.
It was the second time in as many weeks that the Spartans and Coyotes met on the opening day of a tournament. San Jose State, the defending Mountain West Tournament champions, erased a 10-3 deficit last week in securing a 16-12 win. The Spartans erased a 5-3 deficit Friday to improve to 5-1.
San Jose State outfielder Kaelin Amrein's two-out, bases-loaded single to right plated the tying run in the top of the sixth, but a bobble in the outfield allowed the go-ahead run to score on the play. It was South Dakota's second error of the inning and fourth of the game. Of the Spartans' six runs, one was earned.
Both teams scored three times in the fourth inning, and South Dakota took the lead on a two-run homer to right by
Emily Winckler in the fifth. It was the fourth home run in six games for Winckler, who also homered against San Jose State last week in Arizona.
Jamie Holscher had two of the Coyotes' six hits. She singled to lead off the fourth and later scored on a passed ball.
Breanna Alvarez had an RBI groundout that cut the Spartans' lead to 3-2 and
Christy Warnock followed with an RBI single.
Taylor Steinfeldt singled in the second as part of a 1-for-3 effort. She has hit safely in all seven games this season and leads USD with a .478 average (11-for-23).
