RUSTON, La.—South Dakota snapped a four-game skid by pounding out 12 hits in a six-inning, 10-1 win against Alcorn State in its first of two games Saturday at the Louisiana Tech Invitational. Saint Louis blanked the Coyotes 6-0 in the nightcap. USD (2-13) is 1-3 at the tournament with a final game coming at 9 a.m. Sunday against UMass Lowell.
South Dakota 10, Alcorn State 1
Taylor Steinfeldt hit two home runs and
Emily Winckler added a three-run blast in leading South Dakota past Alcorn State. It was round trippers two and three for Steinfeldt on the season while Winckler tied
Alyssa Fernandez for the team lead with five. Fernandez,
Lauren Eamiguel and
Dustie Durham had two hits each and combined for four runs against the Braves (1-8).
In addition to a single and a double at the plate, Durham (2-4) pitched all six innings in the circle to pick up her second win of the season. She allowed six hits, all singles, three of which came in the first inning when Alcorn State scored its lone run. Durham struck out five and walked none.
Saint Louis 6, South Dakota 0
Saint Louis scored four runs on four hits and three free passes in the sixth inning to pull away from South Dakota. It proved plenty of cushion for starting pitcher Maddie Baalman (1-3), who allowed five hits and struck out two for the shutout. Baalman got some help behind her as the Billikens (3-6) caught one runner stealing and turned two double plays with runners in scoring position.
Camille Fowler was 3-for-3 for the Coyotes and Durham was 2-for-3 to account for all five USD hits. Winckler drew two of Baalman's four walks and was 0-for-1.
Durham was 4-for-6 with a double in the two games Saturday and is 5-for-8 at the plate for the tournament. All three hits for Steinfeldt in Ruston have gone for extra bases. Fowler and Eamiguel have four hits in two days at Lady Techster Stadium.
