Durham delivers in 5-4 win vs. UMass Lowell

SB: USD 5, UML 4

RUSTON, La.—South Dakota junior Dustie Durham capped a spectacular performance in Louisiana by going 2-for-3 with an RBI and tossing a complete game in leading the Coyotes to a 5-4 win against UMass Lowell Sunday in the final game of the Louisiana Tech Invitational.

South Dakota (3-13) won two of its final three games in Ruston with Durham (3-4) pitching both wins. She was 2-1 in the circle on the trip with 14 strikeouts in nearly 14 innings of work. At the plate, she went 7-for-11 (.636) with a walk, a double, an RBI and a run scored.

Emily Winckler homered for the second time in as many days to get the Coyotes going Sunday. She hit a two-run shot to center in the top of the first that put USD ahead 2-0. Winckler was 5-for-13 (.385) in Ruston with team-highs of five RBIs and four runs scored. She has six home runs in 16 games.

Taylor Steinfeldt led off the top of the second with a double and came around to score on an infield single from Camille Fowler that made it 3-0. Fowler was 3-for-4 Sunday with two runs scored. She totaled seven hits and stole two bases in five games at the tournament.

Durham scored Fowler in the fifth with a base hit through the left side that made it 4-0. It was 4-4 two innings later when Durham sent a single to center that moved Fowler from second to third. The throw home on the play bounced away from the River Hawks' catcher and Fowler came in to score the go-ahead run.

Durham pitched a 1-2-3 seventh to close the win. She allowed eight hits in all, four of which came in the bottom of the fifth when UMass Lowell got all of its runs. Meghan Chojnowski tied the game in the fifth with a three-run homer off Durham to left field.

South Dakota will return to Vermillion before heading out west next weekend to compete in the Grand Canyon Classic in Phoenix, Arizona. The Coyotes will play five games there starting Friday and remain in Arizona the following week for spring break.
