OMAHA, Neb.—South Dakota scored 22 runs on 25 hits in taking two from Omaha on the opening day of Summit League play Thursday at Westside Field. The Coyotes took the first game 11-6 and won game two 11-2 in five innings.
Dustie Durham, who got the win in the circle for South Dakota (12-20, 2-0 Summit) in game one, hit a three-run home run that cleared the scoreboard in left field to get the Coyotes going in the opener and the runs kept coming.
Jessica Rogers added a grand slam in the fifth inning that broke a 5-5 tie and
Sarah Lisko, who relieved Durham, got the final six outs to shut the door on the Mavericks.
Rogers stayed hot and laced a two-run double in the top of the first inning of game two. The Coyotes led 3-2 when South Dakota put together an 8-run fourth inning that included a three-run bomb by right fielder
Taylor Steinfeldt. It was her fifth home run of the season.
After earning the save in game one, Lisko pitched all five innings of game two to improve to 5-6 on the season. In her seven innings Thursday, she allowed two runs on six hits and struck out four.
Rogers, who has two grand slams this month, totaled seven RBIs Thursday to move into a tie for first place atop the Summit with teammate
Emily Winckler with 24 driven in. Durham, who moved her pitching record to 7-7, was 5-for-7 at the plate with the homer and two doubles. She is batting .340, which is third-best on the team. Winckler was also 5-for-7 Thursday with a double, three RBIs and three runs scored.
Omaha (12-21, 0-2) scored five runs on six hits in the first two innings of game one, but were limited to three runs on nine hits in 10 innings after. Catcher Natalie Mostek was 4-for-5 on the day with a double and four runs scored. Savannah Fisher and Emma Dargy both homered in the opener. Omaha's top hitter, Kelly Pattison, was 3-for-5 with two RBIs.
Rogers helped slow the Mavericks' run game by throwing out three would-be base stealers. Omaha entered with a league-high 37 steals on the season. In addition, South Dakota turned a double play in game two, their 18
th of the season.
Game three of the series is set for noon on Friday.
