TUCSON, Ariz.—South Dakota senior
Emily Winckler blasted her Summit League leading seventh home run of the season off Arizona's all-region hurler Taylor McQuillin to highlight the Coyotes' 9-1 loss to the ninth-ranked Wildcats Thursday night at Hillenbrand Stadium.
Winckler's solo shot in the top of the third cut Arizona's lead to 3-1, but it was the only hit South Dakota could muster against McQuillin. The Wildcat ace struck out nine and walked one in five innings of work to improve to 12-1 on the season.
Alyssa Palomino led off the bottom of the first with a home run to put Arizona (16-2) on the board 1-0. The Wildcats added a second run on an RBI by Jessie Harper. Palomino was 3-for-4 on the night with two RBIs and two runs scored.
South Dakota (6-17) trailed just 4-1 heading into the fifth behind the pitching of freshman
Sarah Lisko, but the Wildcats struck for five in the frame to walk off with the win. Dejah Mulipola, who homered in the third, had a bases-loaded single with two outs in the fifth for the final blow.
The game was the first at the Wildcat Classic. South Dakota returns Friday for a 5 p.m. (MT) dual against No. 24 USC Upstate immediately followed by a contest against San Diego.
