TUCSON, Ariz.—South Dakota junior catcher
Jessica Rogers, the reigning Summit League Player of the Week, went 4-for-4 at the plate with two RBIs, including a walk-off double in the bottom of the eighth inning that gave the Coyotes a 6-5 win against San Diego Friday evening at Arizona's Wildcat Classic.
The Coyotes (8-17) are 2-1 at the Classic with two games to go. South Dakota will take on Wisconsin at 3 p.m. (MT) before granting a rematch to San Diego at 5 p.m. (MT).
It was the first four-hit performance by a Coyote this season and the third of Rogers' career. After San Diego (11-13) stranded a runner on third in the top of the inning, Rogers got the green light with
Ashtyn Blakeman placed on second base and drove a 1-1 pitch to the gap in left center.
The score came after South Dakota gave San Diego four runs in the top of the seventh inning with some defensive miscues that forced extras. Coyote starter
Dustie Durham, who pitched three scoreless innings in an upset of USC Upstate one game earlier, pitched all eight innings in this one to move to 5-5 on the season. After giving up the lead, Durham struck out Hannah Gilliland with one out in the eighth and got top hitter Kailey Hill to ground out to third to keep the game tied 5-5.
South Dakota (8-17) took a 3-0 lead in the third on a two-run triple by
Emily Winckler followed by an infield single by
Lauren Eamiguel.
Taylor Steinfeldt made it 4-1 with a double in the fifth and Rogers followed suit with an RBI single that made it 5-1.
Eamiguel and leadoff
Camille Fowler each had two hits for the Coyotes, who outhit the Toreros 12-9. Lindsay Clare was 3-for-4 to lead San Diego and had a solo home run in the fourth inning, her first of the season.
