LOS ANGELES—South Dakota catcher
Jessica Rogers became just the 11
th player this season to homer off UCLA pitching, but it wasn't enough as the top-ranked Bruins held on for a 4-1 win against the Coyotes to conclude weekend play at Easton Stadium. Earlier in the day, it was 25
th-ranked Oklahoma State which topped South Dakota 8-0.
Rogers hit her Summit-leading 12
th home run of the season off Bruin starter Holly Azevedo (14-0), who had allowed one home run in 83 innings coming in. Rogers had two hits in three at bats against Azevedo.
UCLA (43-3) scored four runs on four singles and a pair of walks in the third inning, but was all Coyote pitchers
Alexis Devers and
Sarah Lisko allowed to the potent lineup. Lisko, in particular, allowed two hits and had two punchouts in three full innings. Devers pitched the first three innings and allowed five hits.
It was a four-run fifth inning that allowed Oklahoma State (36-15) to walk off the win in the opening game Saturday. Madi Sue Montgomery hit her 13
th home run of the season to stake the Cowgirls to a 2-0 lead in the first, and Michaela Richbourg won it in the fifth with a two-run single. Oklahoma State racked up 12 hits in five frames.
Cowgirl starter Samantha Clakley tossed a three-hitter to improve to 15-7. She struck out three and walked none. Rogers,
Camille Fowler and
Christy Warnock registered hits for the Coyotes.
Fowler was 5-for-11 with a double in four games against the nationally-ranked programs in Los Angeles. Rogers was 4-for-9. South Dakota (15-36) concludes regular season play next weekend against Kansas City.
