TULSA, Okla. – A late comeback fell short for the South Dakota men's basketball team in a 77-74 loss at Oral Roberts Thursday night inside the Mabee Center.

South Dakota had a chance to tie the game with a
Stanley Umude 3-point shot as time was expiring but the shot missed giving the Golden Eagles their fourth Summit League victory. Oral Roberts, 8-13 overall and 4-2 in Summit League action, was led by Kevin Obanor with 31 points on 7-of-14 shooting and 16-of-18 from the free throw line.

Juniors
Tyler Peterson and
Cody Kelley each tallied double-doubles for the Coyotes, marking Peterson's second-straight and the first of Kelley's career. Peterson totaled 20 points and a career-high 12 rebounds while Kelley scored 14 points and grabbed a career-best 10 rebounds. Umude led USD with 21 points, his eighth-straight game of 13 or more points and third-straight 20-point game.

South Dakota, 8-10 overall and 2-3 in the loop, opened a seven-point advantage in the opening half when Umude sank a 3-point basket to give the Coyotes the 22-15 edge. The Golden Eagles then used a 24-10 run to close the half and enter intermission with a 39-32 lead.

In the second half, Oral Roberts built its lead as large as 13 points but saw the Coyotes methodically break it down. With the deficit at six points, junior
Brandon Armstrong sank a trey with 1:50 on the clock to make it a three-point game.

However, the Coyotes and Golden Eagles traded possessions, with four free throws off the hands of Obanor for ORU and layups from Peterson. It was a layup from Peterson with 52 seconds on the clock, which brought the final score of 77-74.

The Coyotes shot a season-best 89.5 percent from the free-throw line, hitting 17-of-19 attempts. From the field, USD shot 45.5 percent on 25-of-55 attempts. Oral Roberts sank 23-of-59 of its field goal attempts for 39 percent.

South Dakota continues its three-game road trip at Omaha on Sunday. Tip-off from Baxter Arena is slated for 6 p.m., part of a split doubleheader with the South Dakota women.
