Rivals meet as conference foes once again

MBB at UND

The rivalry renews, this time as Summit League foes, as South Dakota travels to North Dakota for a 7 p.m. contest Wednesday night.

The Game
South Dakota and North Dakota have been foes in the North Central Conference, Great West Conference and now will meet as part of the Summit League with both squads looking to snap two-game skids. The Coyotes have dropped games at Oral Roberts and Omaha on a three-game road trip while UND has fallen to South Dakota State and at North Dakota State.

The Fighting Hawks
North Dakota has opened Summit League action with a 2-5 record and an overall record of 8-12. UND has dropped two-straight games, first a four-point loss to South Dakota State then a two-point setback at North Dakota State. The Fighting Hawks have picked up league victories against Denver and Western Illinois.

Cortez Seales leads North Dakota with 12.5 points per game while Conner Avants drops in 12.4 points per outing. Marlon Stewart, who has played in just nine games this year, is averaging 11.9 points per contest. Filip Rebraca tops the team with 5.7 rebounds per game.

The Coyotes
South Dakota has dropped its last two games by a combined 10 points to hold a 2-4 Summit League record and 8-11 overall record. The Coyotes conclude the three-game, 1,800-mile road trip looking to pick up its second Summit League road win of the year.

Sophomore Stanley Umude has solidified himself as the Coyotes' leading scorer with four-straight games of 20 points or more. In six Summit League contests, he ranks third in the league averaging 20.5 points per game and grabs 5.7 rebounds per contest. Not shy defensively, he ranks fifth in the league with a blocked shot per game.

Junior Triston Simpson tallies 12.7 points per game but has totaled 13.3 points per game over his last four games. Simpson and Umude are joined in double-digit scoring by Tyler Peterson at 11.8 points per game and Trey Burch-Manning at 12.5 points per game. Burch-Manning, who has missed the past four games with a foot injury, leads USD with 6.4 rebounds per game.

The Series
A lot can be said about the history between the two schools. Simply, UND holds a 99-88 all-time series lead, but over the last 10 meetings the series is tied at five each. Wednesday's contest is the first since March 12, 2011, when UND prevailed in the Great West Conference Championship game in Orem, Utah.

One Last Thing
The contest with North Dakota is the culmination of sorts for the Coyotes beginning with a three-game road trip. The road trip covered 1,800 miles with stops at Oral Roberts and Omaha. The contest is also the culmination of having five of their first seven league games on the road before beginning a stretch of five of eight inside the Sanford Coyote Sports Center.
