VERMILLION – South Dakota volleyball coach
Leanne Williamson has announced the addition of former Omaha Marian product Maddie Wiedenfeld to the roster.
Wiedenfeld, who led Marian to a state title as a prep senior in 2017, spent the 2018 season as a freshman at the University of New Hampshire.
She enrolls at South Dakota for spring classes, which begin Jan. 7, and will have three years of eligibility remaining.
"We are very excited that Maddie has chosen to be a Coyote to finish her career," said Williamson. "We were able to watch Maddie grow throughout her career and we believe her best volleyball is ahead of her. She had a great freshman season at New Hampshire, and had great production on the court. We believe she will be a great addition on the court as well as within our culture.
Wiedenfeld saw action in all 27 matches this fall for UNH, compiling 252 kills (2.55 k/s) along with 45 digs and 59 total blocks.
Wiedenfeld was named to the America East All-Rookie Team as New Hampshire finished the season with a 12-15 record under veteran coach Jill Hirschinger, who announced her retirement after 40 seasons, including the final 23 at UNH.
South Dakota posted a 21-10 record and qualified for the NCAA Tournament at the Division I level for the first time in school history. The Coyotes secured the NCAA berth by beating Denver to capture the program's first Summit League tourney title.
