Drake hands Coyotes 5-2 setback

WT: Drake 5, USD 2

DES MOINES, Iowa – South Dakota captured wins at No. 1 and No. 2 singles but ultimately fell in the match to Drake, 5-2, Saturday morning inside the Roger Knapp Tennis Center.

Jana Lazarevic posted a win over Liza Petushkova at No. 1 singles by winning the super tiebreak 10-6 after the two had split the first two sets, 5-7 and 6-2.

Habiba Aly earned a three-set victory over Carmen Palumbo at No. 2 singles, 2-6, 6-3, 6-0.

Nanette Nylund dropped a three-set match at No. 4 singles when she fell in the super tie-break 10-3 to Kelsey Neville.

"Tough Match for us today," coach Brett Barnett said. "Drake out played and out competed us and deserved to win.

"I'm proud that we fought in singles but it was too late. We cannot keep getting down so quickly in doubles and singles and expect to win. Jana, Biba and Nettie did a great job fighting in singles and pulling out two wins. We've got a lot we need to improve on top to bottom in our lineup before we travel to the Pacific Northwest."

South Dakota (0-2) heads to the Portland, Oregon on Friday before facing Seattle University on Saturday.
