Coyotes clash with the Huskers

VERMILLION, S.D. – The South Dakota men's basketball team faces off against the Nebraska Huskers on Tuesday, Dec. 1 inside the Pinnacle Bank Arena at 8 p.m. The game will be broadcasted on the Big Ten Network with play-by-play by Kevin Kugler and color by Nick Bahe.
 
TIP OFF
  • South Dakota returns five players. one starter, from a season ago. The Yotes also welcome in 11 new players into this 2020-21 team.
  • Stanley Umude earned 2020-21 preseason first-team all-Summit League honors voted on by coaches, SIDs and select media.
  • Stanley Umude became the 31st player in program history to record 1,000 career points in a Coyote uniform with 24 points in the season opener.
  • Several Yotes notched their first points in a USD uniform. Six of the 11 newcomers recorded their first points during the Little Apple Classic.
  • Umude is ninth all-time in blocked shots with 85. Jeff Rau (88), Trevor Gruis (112) and Mike Kloth (121) are within range for Umude if he replicates his totals from last season. He is also tied for ninth for most blocked shots in a single season with 43 last season.
  • The Coyotes are 0-2 for the first time since the 2015-16 season and will look to pick up its first win of this 2020-21 season.
  • USD will try to put their cold shooting woes behind them in their third game of the season. The Yotes are shooting 35 percent from the field and are only averaging 57 points throughout two games this season.
                                  
ABOUT NEBRASKA
The Huskers, capped off a slew of games last week inlcuding a game against fellow Summit League foe North Dakota State. The Huskers came out on top in that one 79-57 for their second win of the season. The Huskers put four players in double figures led by Teddy Allen with 22 points. The Huskers put the lock on the Bison's offense as NDSU shot only 17 percent in the second half. In Fred Hoiberg's second season the helm, the Huskers have had a balanced attack with five players averaging double figures and a sixth averaging 8.7 points per game. Allen enters the week ranked 10th in the Big Ten in scoring at 17.7 points per game.

LAST TIME OUT
The Coyotes faced a fellow mid-major team in Drake after opening the season against the Pac-12's Colorado. Shooting woes plauged USD in both games at the Little Apple Classic as the Yotes shot 33 percent against CU and 37 percent against Drake. A.J. Plitzuweit recorded a season-high 14 points for the Coyotes while Stanley Umude notched 10 points. USD got outscored 37-15 in bench points, 11-4 in fast break points and 36-24 in the paint. Against Colorado, the Coyotes started out cold shooting 33 percent in the first half. Things didn't get much better in the second half either as the Coyotes lost 84-61 to the Buffs. USD was outscored 16-11 on second chance points and 19-2 on fast break points. The Coyotes held their own in the paint and on the boards securing 42 rebounds to the Buffs 45 and recording 26 points in the paint to the Buffs 28.
