Coyotes host undefeated Bulldogs Friday

VERMILLION, S.D. – The South Dakota Coyotes (1-5) will host Drake Friday inside the Sanford Coyote Sports Center at 5 p.m. in its home opener.

  • The Coyotes are 3-11 all-time against the Bulldogs and 1-2 all-time in Vermillion.
  • Umude unleashed on in-state rival SDSU this past Saturday. He recorded a career-high 41 points in the win. Umude tied Iowa's Luka Garza for the most points scored by a Division I player this season.
  • Umude's 41 is the eighth-highest scoring game in Coyote history and best since Turner Trofholz dropped 42 on Nebraska-Kearney in March of 2005. It is also the most points scored by a Division I men's basketball player inside the Sanford Pentagon.
  • Brady Heiman leads the Summit League with eight blocks this season.
  • Tasos Kamateros and Xavier Fuller made their first career starts at the Dakota Showcase, Kamateros recorded 12 points in his first start while Fuller scored 15 points in his first start
  • A.J. Plitzuweit ranks second in the Summit League with 4.2 assists per game. He recorded 19 assists over the Dakota Showcase.


ABOUT DRAKE

Earlier this season, Drake defeated USD, 69-53, at the Little Apple Classic. Joseph Yesufu had a career-high 14 points in Drake's win. The Bulldogs are averaging 84.0 points per game this season and have scored 80 or more points in five games this season, including four-straight. That offense has propelled Drake to a 6-0 start to tie for the third-best start to a season in school history behind only the 1979-80 (7-0) and 1970- 71 (8-0) teams. All six of Drake's wins have come by double-digits. Drake's current margin of victory is 23.8 points per game, the 27th best average in the nation. That scoring has been led by 52.8 percent shooting, the 20th best mark in the nation, combined with a 36.4 percent field goal defense, which ranks 27th. Drake is led by Shanquan Hemphill's 12.5 points per game.
