BROOKINGS, S.D. – True freshman Noah Freidel scored 21 of his 26 points in the second half to carry South Dakota State to a 85-80 win over South Dakota inside Frost Arena Sunday afternoon.
The Jackrabbits (21-8, 13-2 Summit) extend their home win streak to 24 and their overall win streak to eight games. South Dakota falls to 19-11 and 9-6 in the loop. South Dakota State moves a game and a half ahead of North Dakota State after the Bison fell to North Dakota Saturday night.
South Dakota can still be seeded no higher than three and no lower than five depending on the outcomes of the final weeks games in the Summit League Tournament.
Four Coyotes scored in double-figures led by
Stanley Umude with 15 points.
Tyler Hagedorn recorded his eighth career double-double and fourth of the season with 12 points and 12 boards.
Triston Simpson finished with 14 points on 6-of-11 shooting while
Cody Kelley recorded 13 points on 3-of-5 shooting from deep.
After the Jacks jumped out to a 13-4 lead, the Yotes chipped away at the lead and took their first lead of the game at the 5:45 mark of the first half on a
Tasos Kamateros layup. South Dakota carried that momentum into the break with a 34-32 lead.
After a close first 13 minutes of the second half, the Jacks threatened to pull away with a 65-59 lead forcing a timeout from South Dakota with 6:21 remaining. Kelley nailed a long ball out of the timeout to bring the game back to three points, but the Jacks would go on a 7-1 run to bring the score to 72-63 with just under five minutes to go.
Another Kelley 3-pointer capped off a 6-0 run to cut the Jacks' lead to 72-69 forcing a timeout from SDSU head coach Eric Henderson. That's as close as the Yotes would get as Freidel would score five straight points to push the lead back to eight with three minutes left.
South Dakota State converted on free throws down the stretch while the Coyotes weren't able to generate enough offensive to get any closer.
In addition to Freidel, SDSU had three score in double-figures in Douglas Wilson, Alex Arians and David Wingett. Wilson finished with 20 points while Arians and Wingett finished with 13 points apiece.
South Dakota shot 47 percent from the field while South Dakota State shot 50 percent.
The Coyotes are back in action when they host North Dakota in the regular-season finale on Saturday inside the Sanford Coyote Sports Center. Saturday's game is the second-part of a double-header and senior night for the Yotes' five seniors. Tip-off is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. South Dakota defeated North Dakota in Grand Forks, North Dakota, 82-68 on Feb. 8.
