SIOUX FALLS, S.D.—North Dakota's all-Summit guard Marlon Stewart hit a pull-up jumper with 10 seconds left to give the Fighting Hawks a 72-71 lead and South Dakota couldn't convert on their end as UND pulled a 74-71 upset at the Denny Sanford PREMIER Center Sunday evening in the first round of the Summit League Tournament.
The sixth-seeded Fighting Hawks (14-17) avenged two double-digit losses to the Coyotes (20-12) during the regular season including a 77-67 loss in Vermillion last weekend on the final day of the regular season. It was North Dakota's first win against South Dakota since 2011, ending a string of four losses within the Summit in that span.
Stewart's jumper from just inside the 3-point line completed a nine-point comeback over the game's final five minutes. His 21 points led all scorers and all five North Dakota starters registered at least 11 points.
South Dakota guard
Tyler Peterson drove to the hoop on the ensuing possession, but his pull-up in the lane fell away. Brady Danielson secured the rebound with 2.8 seconds left and made two free throws for the Hawks to make it 74-71.
Triston Simpson's desperation shot at the buzzer missed the mark.
Tyler Hagedorn had 17 points and
Stanley Umude added 15 for South Dakota. Peterson finished with 14 and
Cody Kelley chipped in 12.
Just about everything needed to go right for the Hawks to make that climb and they did. South Dakota didn't make a field goal and totaled two points over the final five minutes of the game. The Coyotes took just three shots in that span. Three turnovers and two missed free throws on front end of 1-and-1's contributed.
Despite those numbers, USD regained the lead at 71-70 with 1:10 left, and rebounded a Stewart missed 3-pointer with 50 seconds left. The Coyotes took a timeout and went to Peterson who was called for an offensive foul with 24 seconds to go. Stewart's winner followed.
North Dakota totaled 24 free throw attempts combined in its two regular season meetings against South Dakota. They earned 32 attempts in this one and made 24. The Coyotes attempted 51 free throws in two games against the Hawks during the regular season. They earned 21 Sunday and made 16.
It was North Dakota that jumped out to a 21-7 lead seven minutes into the contest. South Dakota spent the rest of the half playing catchup and tied the game at 38-38 just before the first-half horn on a 3-point play by Hagedorn. He and Umude combined for 25 of South Dakota's 38 first-half points.
The rally continued and South Dakota scored the first seven points out of the break. Shortly thereafter the Coyotes took their largest lead of the game at 54-43 on a Hagedorn triple.
North Dakota got within four at 60-56 but Kelley's second 3 of the game pushed the lead back to 67-57 with 5:53 remaining.
One of the more crucial plays came a minute earlier. Simpson drove and made contact with Stewart as both players crashed to the floor. It was a 50-50 call, but it determined which point guard would pick up their fourth foul with 6:47 left. Simpson sat out the next 3:30 of game time.
Stewart made 5-of-14 from the field and 8-of-12 from the line to get to 21. He also handed out five assists, grabbed five boards and had three steals. Hagedorn was 5-of-9 from the field, 2-of-4 from deep, and had a game-high eight boards.
