Opening day has three Coyotes on NFL rosters

FB: NFL Opening Week

VERMILLION, S.D.—Chris Streveler is set to make his NFL debut with the Arizona Cardinals, Kameron Cline is on the practice squad of the Indianapolis Colts, and Tom Compton begins his ninth NFL season and first with the San Francisco 49ers as the 2020 NFL season debuts this week.

Streveler is one of three quarterbacks on coach Kliff Kingsbury's opening-day roster, joining starter Kyler Murray (Oklahoma) and six-year veteran Brett Hundley (UCLA). The Cardinals open the season at noon CT Sunday at Compton's 49ers in San Francisco, California.

Streveler is the 2017 FCS Offensive Player of the Year who led South Dakota to its first FCS playoffs and a win at Nicholls in the Coyotes' playoff debut. He set 20 program records and five MVFC records his senior year including new marks for passing yards (4,134) and total offense (4,854). He accounted for 43 touchdowns – 32 passing and 11 rushing.

Streveler signed with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers of the CFL and became the first quarterback to start a CFL game coming out of college since 1994. Streveler started five games in 2018 and seven in 2019 when he helped lead Winnipeg to its first Grey Cup in 29 years. He passed for 2,698 yards and ran for 1,167 in 35 games for the Bombers and accounted for 41 touchdowns – 22 rushing and 19 passing.

Cline was a three-year starter along the Coyotes' defensive line who compiled 121 tackles including 7.0 sacks and 22.0 tackles-for-loss in 43 games throughout his career. He had a career-high 40 stops during the Coyotes' playoff run in 2017, and had 36 tackles including 4.0 sacks and 10.0 tackles-for-loss as a senior this past season.

Cline signed a free agent contract with Indianapolis back in April, and is one of 16 players named to the Colts' practice squad. Those players can be activated on game day before the team announces their inactives (90 minutes before game time). Cline is one of 66 FCS alums signed to practice squads.

Compton has played in 99 games and earned 34 starts on the offensive line during an NFL career that began with Washington (2012-15) and has included seasons with Atlanta (2016), Chicago (2017), Minnesota (2018) and the New York Jets (2019). He started 14 games with the Vikings two years ago and five with the Jets last season. He made playoff appearances with both Washington and Atlanta.

Compton never missed a start in 43 games with the Coyotes from 2008-11. He was a two-time all-American and two-time all-Great West Conference pick at USD. He was a sixth-round draft choice by Washington in 2012 and began his career on the practice squad before being promoted to the active roster.
