VERMILLION, S.D. – South Dakota women's soccer head coach
Michael Thomas is pleased to announce the signing of five players to National Letters of Intent. Brooklyn Bordson, Natalie Cunningham, Rylee Haldeman, Cora Schurman and Mady Za will join the team next season.
"We are excited to welcome this group to the University of South Dakota," Thomas said. "They are all good soccer players but they are also good students and people and we are eager to have them join our current group"
Brooklyn Bordson | Lino Lakes, Minn. | Centennial HS | Midfield
Bordson played her high school soccer for Crista Carlson at Centennial High School in Lino Lakes, Minnesota. She was a three-time 7AA conference champion, two-time section 7AA champion and Class AA state runner up in 2019. Bordson earned rookie of the year honors on her high school team and was a three-year letterwinner as well as all-conference honorable mention in 2020. In the classroom she earned the academic achievement award all four years of high school. She has recorded eight goals and four assists thus far in her senior season that is still in full swing. She played her club ball for Minnesota Thunder Academy where she helped her team to the ECNL championship league in 2020.
Natalie Cunningham | Salem, Ore. | West Salem HS | Goalkeeper
Cunningham played her high school soccer for Benje Orozco at West Salem High School where she was a two year letterwinner. She earned a record of 10-1-1 in her career. Outside of soccer she competed in track and field and in the classroom she was a two-time member of the honor roll. She was a three-time member of the ODP state team. Cunningham was the Oregon Junior Olympic Champion in the shot put and placed 13th at the National Junior Olympics in the shot put. Cunningham plans to study nursing at USD.
Rylee Haldeman | Hartford, S.D. | West Central HS | Forward
Haldeman played her high school soccer for West Central and Greg Anderson in nearby Hartford, South Dakota. She earned offensive player of the championship in 2018 & 2020 and was honorable mention in 2018. She is a three-time Class A state champ and made the state championship game all four years of high school. She earned all-state honors in 2020 and was a SD HS Sports Awards Fall Nominee. She recorded 63 goals and 18 assists in her career with the Trojans. Outside of soccer, she competed in track and basketball where she was a state champion in the 4x100 and placed second and third at the state tournament in basketball. Haldeman plans to study dental hygiene at USD.
Cora Schurman | Yankton, S.D. | Yankton HS | Forward
A two-time ESD Conference champion and a 2019 South Dakota AA state champion, Schurman was a five-year letter winner for the Gazelles at nearby Yankton High School. Schurman was an honor roll student and a HOSA member while also competing in track and basketball in high school. Schurman recorded 24 goals and 12 assists in her career. During her senior season she had a shot on goal percentage of 60 percent while recording seven blocked shots in her holding mid position. She played her club ball at SFS Academy Atlas US Club and plans to major in kinesiology and sport management at USD.
Mady Za | Fairfax, Va.| Robinson Secondary HS | Forward
Za player her high school soccer at Robinson Secondary High School where she was a scholar athlete and one of two freshmen selected to play on varsity. She was a Patriot League District finalist and was on the National Honor Society, the National English Honor Society and the academic honor roll. Za also ran track where she was a district and regional champion and a state qualifier. The Fairfax, Virginia, native played her club ball for Metro United Soccer where she helped the team make the ECNL National Playoffs in both 2018 & 2019. Her club team was the Mid-Atlantic ECNL Conference Champions as well as the Jefferson Cup Showcase, the Eastern Regional League Champions and the Jefferson Cup Finalists and a two-time Virginia State Cup Champions. Za plans to study medical biology at USD.
