The Coyotes
South Dakota, ranked fifth in the CollegeInsder.com Mid-Major poll, comes off a tough opening week with a single-possession loss to Oklahoma and a loss to the nation's No. 1 team in South Carolina. Senior guard
Liv Korngable put together an impressive first week with back-to-back 20-point games and tying her career high of 24 points against the No. 1 team in the nation. She shot 56.7 percent (17-of-30) from the field between the two games. Korngable was picked to the preseason all-Summit second team. Fellow super seniors
Hannah Sjerven and
Chloe Lamb were named to the preseason all-league first team. The trio have accounted for 87 percent of USD's scoring through the first two games.
Â
The Bulldogs
Drake, ranked No. 20 in the CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major poll, begins its first season under head coach Allison Pohlman. Pohlman, a longtime Drake assistant, was promoted following the departure of Jennie Baranczyk. The Coyotes faced Baranczyk's new squad, Oklahoma, in their season opener. Drake defeated Creighton 82-79 in their season opener on Wednesday night. Freshman Katie Dinnebier hit a 3-pointer with three seconds to go to lift the Bulldogs to victory. Dinnebier led Waukee High School to an Iowa state championship a year ago. Freshman Anna Miller had a game-high 17 points to lead four Bulldogs in double-figures.
Â
The Series
Drake holds a 6-5 edge in the competitive all-time series, although the Coyotes are 5-2 since moving to NCAA Division I. It was a thrilling 102-94 overtime victory for the Coyotes in the last meeting of the series on Nov. 13, 2019. That win helped launch the Coyotes into the national polls during a successful 30-2 campaign.
Â
For history nerds out there, the first four meetings between South Dakota and Drake came in the AIAW days. The Coyotes spent a few seasons in AIAW Division I and Drake joined them in the Region 6 North Section. That division included Minnesota, Iowa and Iowa State.
Â
One Last Thing
A familiar face is on Drake's bench. Kayla (Tetschlag) Karius was on
Dawn Plitzuweit's staff for two seasons in Vermillion. Karius is in her first season at Drake after spending the time in between at Wisconsin.
