The Game
South Dakota hosts Southern at 7 p.m. Friday night inside the Sanford Coyote Sports Center in Vermillion.
Fans can tune into the game on the Coyote Sports Network with John Thayer, carried on KVHT 106.3 FM in Yankton/Vermillion and KQSF 95.7 in Sioux Falls, or by using The Varsity Network app. A free live stream of the game will be available on GoYotes.com.
The Coyotes
South Dakota (1-1) enters a three-game home stand following a Veteran's Day win over Air Force and a loss to a receiving votes' Drake team on the road in week one. The Coyotes must replace two of the top-50 scorers in the nation from last season in
Stanley Umude (graduate transfer) and
A.J. Plitzuweit (injury). Three starters and the team's next five leading scorers return. Point guard
Kruz Perrott-Hunt scored in double-figures in both games to begin the season.
The Jaguars
Southern (1-2) begins its season with five-straight games on the road. Three Jaguars are averaging double-figure scoring to open the season with Tyrone Lyons (14.0), Brion Whitley (11.7) and Jayden Saddler (11.7). Point guard Saddler is also dishing out 6.3 assists per contest. The Jaguars earned a 73-70 road victory at Tulane last Saturday with Lyons blocking the Green Waves' chance at a game-tying bucket.
The Series
This marks the second meeting between the two programs. The first meeting was the season opener of the 2012-13 season at a tournament held in Laramie, Wyoming. Current Coyote assistant coach
Casey Kasperbauer scored seven points in his collegiate debut, but Southern came out on top 83-79.
One Last Thing
Friday night is the first event of the Nebraska MTE (multi-team event). Tennessee State and the Huskers are the other half of the four-team round-robin. Southern faces Nebraska while USD hosts Tennessee State on Sunday.
