The Game
South Dakota returns home to host Wichita State at 1 p.m. Saturday afternoon inside the Sanford Coyote Sports Center in Vermillion.
The game will be televised by Midco Sports with commentary from Jason Andera and Brad Newitt. That broadcast will also be available for streaming on espn+ and Midco Sports Plus. A free web stream will also be available right here on GoYotes.com. Fans can tune into the game on the Coyote Sports Network with John Thayer, carried on KVHT 106.3 FM in Yankton/Vermillion or by using The Varsity Network app.
The Coyotes
Only four nonconference games remain for South Dakota (3-4) ahead of the Summit League opener on Dec. 20. Three of those are inside the Sanford Coyote Sports Center over the next eight days. Senior
Chloe Lamb is coming off a big weekend in the U.S. Virgin Islands, where she was named to the Paradise Jam All-Reef Tournament Team. She averaged more than 20 points and shot 50 percent (25-of-50) from the field while knocking down 10 3-pointers. Lamb had a career-high 30 points, with 10 in overtime, to guarantee the Coyotes' first win over an ACC opponent in Pitt. She's joined in double-figures this season by fellow super seniors
Hannah Sjerven (12.9) and
Liv Korngable (12.0). The trio's wealth of experience has been crucial through this incredibly tough nonconference slate.
The Shockers
Wichita State (7-1) is off to the program's best start under head coach Keitha Adams. The Shockers put an emphasis on offense in the offseason, running the floor and playing fast. Wichita State is averaging nearly 15 more points than its opponents this season and is coming off a 78-62 win over fellow Summit foe Oral Roberts on Wednesday night. The Shockers have a balanced attack with six players averaging between eight and 12 points per game. Mariah McCully and Asia Strong are the duo in double-figures with 11.1 points and 10.4 points per game, respectively. The Shockers also get after it on the boards - Wichita State will be the second-straight team the Coyotes face ranked in the nation's top-10 for rebounding. WSU had 23 offensive boards earlier this week in a win over Northwestern State.
The Series
South Dakota took the lead in the all-time series, 4-3, for the first time last season. This is just Wichita's second-ever trip to Vermillion (2010-11), although the programs have met on a neutral court three times. The Coyotes earned a 62-54 road win in Wichita last season behind Lamb's then-career best 29 point effort. That victory also marked head coach
Dawn Plitzuweit's 300th career win.
One Last Thing
South Dakota's four losses this season are all to Power 5 foes, including top-ranked South Carolina. According to RealTime RPI, the Coyotes' strength of schedule ranks third in the nation. That means only two teams have played a tougher schedule to date.
