Yotes Complete Sweep of Western

VERMILLION, S.D. – On a cold and rainy Sunday afternoon, the South Dakota Coyotes defeated Western Illinois 1-0 at the First Bank & Trust Soccer Complex.

South Dakota (3-5) picks up its first weekend sweep of the season while the Leathernecks (0-10) are still in search of their first win of the season.

"I was proud of the way the team dealt with adversity with the weather," head coach Michael Thomas said. "In addition to a very motivated Western Illinois squad. They continued to work and I couldn't be happier with the weekend."

After 70-plus minutes with no goals for either side, the Yotes struck gold on a corner kick for the games only score. In the 80th minute, senior Abby Ostrem lined up for a corner kick on the side nearest the benches. After a beautifully placed ball from Ostrem, freshman Taylor Ravelo was able to head it in on the backside for her second goal of the season while Ostrem recorded her second assist of the season.

The Yotes recorded 13 shots with seven on net while the Leathernecks recorded five shots with three on goal. In her second straight start, redshirt-freshman Caroline Lewis grabbed three saves while WIU recorded six saves on the afternoon.

South Dakota hits the road to face in state rival South Dakota State Friday and Sunday at Fishback Soccer Park. Friday's game starts at 6 p.m. while Sunday's game starts at 1 p.m.
