VERMILLION, S.D.—South Dakota softball has a conference-high three on the Academic All-Summit League Team announced Friday.
Â
Senior second baseman
Lauren Wobken is a returner to the team. She is joined by teammates
Gill Woodward and
Courtney Wilson on the 11-person list. The Coyotes were the only program to feature three players.
Â
Wobken, a Scribner, Nebraska, native, earned all-Summit honors at second base this season after being an all-Summit third baseman in 2019. She hit a career-best .259 this season with a home run and a team-leading 29 RBIs. She was also solid defensively with a .971 fielding percentage.
Â
Wobken racked up more than 100 hits as a four-year starter including 10 home runs. She was a double major in psychology and kinesiology and sport management and is set to attend occupational therapy school at University of Nebraska Medical Center this fall.
Â
Woodward, who hails from Ile-des-Chenes, Manitoba, saved her best season for last with the Coyotes. She beat defending champion North Dakota State in mid-April for her first collegiate win and went on a roll that led the Coyotes back to the Summit League Tournament. She finished 5-6 in the circle with a team-best 4.43 ERA. She posted 27 strikeouts in 72 2/3 innings of work.
Â
Woodward double majored in political science and philosophy. She plans to start graduate school and work with the softball program at Minot State in North Dakota this fall.
Â
Wilson is a junior outfielder from Grand Island, Nebraska, majoring in elementary and special education. She led the Coyotes and ranked in the top-10 of the Summit with a .345 batting average. That backed up a COVID-shortened 2020 campaign in which she hit .363 and led the Summit League in hits.
Â
Wilson belted her first home run this year, drove in 14 runs and scored 16 times. She also stole four bases and led the Coyotes in both slugging and on-base percentage. Defensively, she's thrown out 13 runners in three years as a starter.
Â
The Coyotes have had at least one player voted to the academic team every year since 2018. The three selections are the most for the program since joining the league in 2012.
