VERMILLION, S.D.—
Deb Petersen, a junior at the University of South Dakota, is one of ten women to gain University Division first team Academic All-America recognition. The 1980-81 honor squad was selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America.
The 6-4 forward who prepped at Anthon-Oto (IA) High School, was the Coyotes' second-leading scorer (15.0 points per game) and rebounder (8.3 rpg) before being sidelined with a knee injury. She was also ranked sixth in the nation in field goal accuracy, connecting on 61.4 percent for her attempts. And she made 75% of her free throw attempts.
"Obviously, we're very proud of Deb and her achievement," declares USD coach Mary Zimmerman. "This is a tremendous honor for Deb, as well as her teammates and our program. We have continually strived to maintain both academic and athletic excellence at the University. This award is evidence that our philosophy has been effective."
Petersen has compiled a 3.89 grade-point average in Biology and Pre-Med. She became eligible for this honor when she was selected to the five-player District Five squad. Senior teammate
Gloria Suntken (3.67 GPA, Recreation) was also chosen to that All-District team.
Deb is the daughter of Richard and Jean Petersen of Correctionville, Iowa.
