Coyotes face Northern Colorado Friday

12.01.2022

South Dakota's longest road trip of the season concludes Friday with a 6 p.m. MT/7 p.m. CT tip against Northern Colorado at Bank of Colorado Arena in Greeley, Colorado.

It is the first matchup between the two teams since a second-round, WNIT contest in 2015. South Dakota hit a shot at the buzzer that was ruled a two-point bucket and Northern Colorado advanced with a 59-58 win.

How to Watch
The game is being broadcast on ESPN+.

How to Listen
Carter Woodiel from the Coyote Sports Network is providing a radio broadcast. You can listen to the broadcast here.

The Coyotes
South Dakota (4-3) is coming off a pair of losses in Las Vegas over the holiday. The Coyotes played without Madison Grange, a starter and the team's third-leading scorer who sustained a season-ending injury late in the game against Saint Louis. That has left the Coyotes with 10 healthy bodies and nine of those are averaging double-digit minutes.

Sophomore point guard Grace Larkins continues to lead the team in nearly every statistical category. She registered her first collegiate double-double last time out with 17 points and 11 rebounds. Redshirt freshman Carley Duffney provided a season-high 15 points off the Coyotes' bench. South Dakota is making 41 percent of its 3-point shots, which ranks sixth nationally

The Bears
Northern Colorado has begun year two under Kristen Mattio, who spent six seasons at West Texas A&M prior to arriving in Greeley. The Bears were 15-16 a year ago. They are 5-2 this season with a win against Denver and a loss to North Dakota State.

The team is coming off its best result of the season, a 102-91, triple-overtime victory against Colorado State Tuesday. Leading scorer Hannah Simental, who averaged 14 points a year ago, is surrounded by four new starters including two redshirt freshmen, one true freshman and UNLV transfer Delaynie Byrne who is averaging 15 points and eight boards through seven games. UNC is shooting 42 percent from beyond the arc and making close to 10 threes per game.

The Series
South Dakota and Northern Colorado were both members of the North Central Conference and played twice a year throughout the 1990s and early 2000s. USD leads the all-time series 19-14. This is just the fourth meeting between the two teams since 2003.
