The Coyotes (5-7, 1-0 Summit)
South Dakota is coming off one of its most encouraging results of the season.
Grace Larkins scored a career-high 31 points and had eight rebounds and eight assists in Monday's 82-59 win against Kansas City to open Summit League play. It was Larkins' second 30-point effort this season. The Coyotes shot a season-best 56 percent from the field, got 11 points off the bench from
Walker Demers and 10 from
Macy Guebert. It ended a six-game losing streak for USD.
Â
The Golden Eagles (3-9, 0-1 Summit)
Pay no attention to Oral Roberts' 3-9 record. A close examination would tell you the Golden Eagles have played one of the more challenging non-conference schedules inside the Summit. Eight of their nine losses are to top-100 foes and they took South Dakota State to the wire on the road Monday night before falling 83-80. Oral Roberts took 14 free throws in that game while the Jacks took 37.
Â
It is the start of the Kelsi Musick era for Oral Roberts. She led Division II Sotuhwestern Oklahoma State to seven NCAA tournaments in 13 seasons and a national runner-up finish in 2019. She inherits a senior-laden roster including Lauren Amey who was Musick's second-leading scorer at SWOSU last year. But the headline is Hannah Cooper, a 5-7 guard, who is averaging 20 points per game in year two at Oral Roberts. Cooper averaged 6.5 points last season. Tirzah Moore, ORU's leading scorer last year at 14 points per game, is also back.
Â
One Last Thing
Wednesday is the final game of a season-long, five-game home stand for the Coyotes. All teams will take a mandatory break for the holiday and return next week. South Dakota hits the road for the first time in Summit play. The Coyotes face St. Thomas next Thursday and Western Illinois next Saturday when play resumes.
