ST. LOUIS—South Dakota wide receiver
Carter Bell and safety
Dennis Shorter have been named the Missouri Valley Football Conference Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week, respectively, for their play during Saturday's 24-19 win against second-ranked North Dakota State in Fargo, North Dakota. It is the first such honor for both players.
Â
Bell scored touchdowns on catches of 50 and 52 yards during the first half of Saturday's win. He took a swing pass and ran untouched down the left sideline for the first score of the game and hauled in a deep ball from quarterback
Aidan Bouman before barreling into the end zone for his second score that put USD in front 21-3.
Â
Bell finished with a game-high 124 yards receiving on five catches. It was the fourth 100-yard effort of his career and the third time he has caught two touchdowns in a game. Bell leads the team with 274 yards receiving this season.
Â
Shorter matched his career high with 13 tackles against North Dakota State. He also intercepted Cam Miller in the second quarter, ending Miller's program-record streak of completed passes and forcing the Bison's first turnover of the season. Two plays later, Bell was in the end zone and USD had a three-score lead.
Â
Shorter intercepted Miller again during a two-point conversion try in the final minute. It kept the score at 24-19 with 36 seconds remaining. Shorter leads the Coyotes with 34 tackles this season.
South Dakota, 3-1 on the season, hosts Murray State for Dakota Days (homecoming) at 2 p.m. Saturday inside the DakotaDome.
