South Dakota heads to DePaul for first road test of the season

11.13.2023

The Game
South Dakota hits the road for its first away game of the season on Tuesday at 8 p.m. The Coyotes travel to Chicago, Ill. to take on the Big East's DePaul. The game will be televised on Fox Sports 2. Fans can tune into the game on the Coyote Sports Network with John Thayer on KVHT 106.3 FM in Yankton/Vermillion or by using the Varsity Network app.

The Series
Tuesday's meeting will be just the second time these two programs have met. The first matchup between the Coyotes and Blue Demons came in the 1938-39 season in Vermillion. DePaul came out on top with a 37-35 win over the Yotes.

The Coyotes
South Dakota is heading into its first road contest with two-straight wins under its belt. The Coyotes hosted Mount Marty on Nov. 6 in their season opener and defeated the Lancers 85-53. On Nov. 10, South Dakota defeated UTRGV 100-79 behind a double-double and a career-high 24 points from Lahat Thioune.

Thioune, a UCF transfer, is one of nine newcomers that joined the Coyote roster this season. Utah transfer Bostyn Holt and Louisiana Tech transfer Kaleb Stewart join Thioune in the Coyotes' starting lineup this season. Stewart averages 12.5 points per game and had a career-high 19 points on 6-of-17 shooting from the floor and 3-of-8 shooting from three in the win over UTRGV. Holt has scored in double-figures in both of his starts as a Yote, including a career-high 16 points in South Dakota's opening night win over Mount Marty.

The Blue Demons
DePaul (0-2) is looking for its first win of the season. The Blue Demons fell to Purdue Fort Wayne 82-74 on Nov. 7 to open the season. On Nov. 11, DePaul fell to Long Beach State 77-73 after nearly overcoming a 22-point deficit. The Blue Demons shot 58.8 percent as a squad in the second half but fell short in the final seconds.

The Blue Demons are led on offense by guard Elijah Fisher. The sophomore had a career-night for DePaul in the close loss to Long Beach State, dropping 25 points on 10-of-14 shooting. 20 of his 25 points came in the second half, and his .714 field goal percentage ranks as one of the top-15 individual performances across the NCAA this season and is the highest in the Big East.

One Last Thing
This matchup comes as a part of the inaugural Arizona Tip-Off Tournament hosted by Intersport Basketball and held at the Desert Diamond Arena. The Coyotes are one of eight teams to join the lineup and will be one of the four teams that make up the Desert Division. South Dakota will face VMI on Nov. 17 while Northern Arizona and Purdue Fort Wayne compete on the other side of the bracket. The championship and third-place games will be played Nov. 18. DePaul faces South Carolina and Grand Canyon takes on San Francisco Nov. 17 in the Cactus Division of the event. Their championship and third-place games will be played Nov. 19. Each team from the Cactus Division will host one team from the Desert Division during non-conference play.
