Coyotes begin trip up north at NDSU Thursday

02.02.2023

South Dakota heads to Fargo to face North Dakota State at 7 p.m. Thursday inside the Scheels Center. It is a rematch of a 79-76 North Dakota State victory in Vermillion on Jan. 7. The Bison outscored South Dakota 9-1 in the final two minutes to pull out the victory.

Thursday marks the 82nd meeting between USD and NDSU. The Bison lead the all-time series 43-38. North Dakota State's 79-76 win over South Dakota at the beginning of January snapped a 13-game win streak the Coyotes boasted over the Bison that dated back to 2017.

The Coyotes (11-11, 7-4 Summit) are looking to bounce back after a 70-64 loss to St. Thomas on Saturday. North Dakota State (13-7, 7-3 Summit) is looking to stay unbeaten at home with an 8-0 record at the Scheels Center this season.

The Coyotes
A young Coyote squad has had to step up to the plate due to injuries, but Carley Duffney's emergence has helped bolster South Dakota. Duffney has started the last four games and averaged 18 points and 5.3 rebounds in that span. She has scored in double figures seven games in a row with two 20-point efforts in her last four games.

The Coyotes' leader all season, as expected, has been true sophomore Grace Larkins, last year's Summit League Sixth Woman of the Year. This year, she leads USD in points, rebounds, assists, steals and blocks. She has had three 30-point games and has flirted with a triple-double five times. Larkins is the third-leading scorer in the Summit at 18.1 points per game, but is in a class by herself by also ranking in the top four in rebounds, assists and steals. No Summit League player has ever finished a season ranked in the top five of all four categories.

True freshman Walker Demers who forewent her senior year of high school, has earned all six starts in place of senior Jeniah Ugofsky in the lineup. She is averaging 8.0 points and 4.9 rebounds in Summit play. Senior Macy Guebert leads the team in minutes and has been terrific defensively against the Summit's assortment of high-scoring guards. Guebert continues to lead the Summit in assist-to-turnover ratio (54 asts, 26 TOs).

The Bison
Jory Collins is in year four at NDSU. Six wins this November highlighted by a win at Minnesota helped set a new tone for a team coming off a seemingly disappointing season. The Bison started 6-1 in Summit play, but have lost two of three and are trying to hang on to second place. NDSU dropped a road game to rival North Dakota 82-73 in its only action last week.

Senior guard Heaven Hamling is back to lead the Bison. Two returners and four newcomers join her this season. One of the newcomers is freshman Elle Evans, the Bison's second-leading scorer at 12.5 points per game. Junior Emily Behnke (8.8 ppg, 6.8 rpg) and Taylor Brown (9.4 ppg, 5.1 rpg), a transfer from American University, lead the frontcourt. Hamling was 1-of-11 from 3-point range, but 8-of-11 from inside it against USD. NDSU's height presented problems for the Coyotes in game one.
