South Dakota claims Summit Women’s All-Sports Award

DENVER—The University of South Dakota has captured the Dr. Helen Smiley Women's All-Sports Award for the sixth time in the last seven competitions. The Summit League's year-end awards were presented Wednesday evening by Commissioner Josh Fenton at the annual Presidents Council and Joint Council meetings.

South Dakota finished third in the Summit League Commissioner's Cup standings. USD tallied 93.5 points in the final standings, behind South Dakota State's 104.5 points and North Dakota State's 103.5 points.

The Coyotes' captured three Summit League crowns during the year. Volleyball swept the Summit League regular season and tournament titles for the first time in program history. USD advanced to its fourth NCAA Tournament in the last five seasons. Track and field had its one shining moment inside the DakotaDome as the men and women swept the indoor conference titles for the first time as members of the Summit League.

Three USD squads also finished runner-up this season: women's swimming and diving, women's outdoor track and field, and women's golf.

The Commissioner's Cup is given annually to the member institution that collects the most combined points in relationship to placement in league-sponsored sports between its men's and women's athletic programs, while the All-Sports Awards are given to the institutions that accumulate the most points in men's sports and women's sports. The men's award is named for former Valparaiso Director of Athletics Dr. William Steinbrecher, who guided the Crusaders from 1979-2004, while the women's award is named for former Western Illinois Director of Athletics Dr. Helen Smiley, who headed WIU's athletic program from 1994-2001.
